Azure API Management is primarily used to provide a central interface to create, provision and manage API for web and cloud applications and services, which means any core application is protected from someone misusing the APi, which in turn means the software can be extended via an APi securely.  

With Azure API Management user can;  

  • Monitor the health of APIs, identifying errors, configure throttling, rate limits and more on each API, ensuring other core software users are not inconvenienced by API traffic.

  • Provides insight into the utilization of APIs identifying the users and their volume, which the author believes tells you how relevant you are to your customer and ecosystem.

  • Creating and managing user roles and defining end to end API usage policies ensuring security folk don't access engineering code etc etc.

  • Provides a central interface to consolidate and manage thousands of API’s across multiple platforms, which means you can set up an ecosystem of vendors, who compliment your product, making you ever more relevant to your customer base.

  • Provide an authentication and access control mechanism to manage and ensure security on API access and utilization, which means you can deal with financial services, banks, government and military customers without them worrying about security because an entire team at Microsoft have worried about it on their behalf.

Ultimately, it means that the developers that code to your APi have a robust product that they can work with and that their programming time and cost should be minimised.

Now we have the credentials out of the way, what can you actually do using a worked example?

In the example here we are using a favourite Microsoft Meeting Invite tool called Outlook and transforming it into:

- A digital workplace tool for your prized collaboration spaces (meeting rooms) and desks.

- We are then extending it again so that the same invite not just attaches the right room and desk resources, but extends them into a wow visitor management solution.

- Effectively delivering a Microsoft Workplace Experience upgrade.

- We are then going to demonstrate just how efficient your Microsoft Workplace can be by running through the process and cost savings.

- Delivering an Microsoft Workplace Efficiency upgrade.

The Microsoft Workplace Experience transformation starts with a simple outlook invite.

  • The user books a meeting and using the Condeco add-in adds a room resource.

  • We know the meeting host details from the invite.

  • We know the guests that can be selected or assumed via some business rules.

  • Example:Guests have a domain that does not include in the email address.

  • Whether the room is booked in Outlook or Condeco doesn't matter because the unique Microsoft Synch feature, keeps both systems updated, in real time.

  • This sounds simple, but removes a whole load of user experience issues, around live availability, respecting the integrity of room and desks resources, as precious workplace assets.

  • From the Condeco system the "listening APi" detects some new guests and posts them into the visitor management system.

  • A visitor invite is issued (rather than a list given to reception) which is tailored to the company (branded) and has a configurable style, as well as:

  • How to get to the building

  • The host details

  • The unique barcode

  • Once scanned the visitor can be asked to answer some basic questions, upload a photo

  • The host is immediately notified by SMS and email, depending on what you have configured.

  • An option exists to use the same barcode for the security barriers.

The 14 steps take the Microsoft Outlook invite and through three APi's, one Microsoft, one Condeco and one visitor management APi and completely transform the Microsoft Workplace Experience.

However, you have to have the vision to see the art of the possible, know which suppliers have API's, and then design the use case transformation.

You also have to think of the entire customer journey from home to room not from reception to security barrier!

Now let's look at the Microsoft Workplace Efficiency transformation and the impact on the workplace practices.

  • The change starts with the visitor, who now saves time they would have spent on working out where you are and how to get there.

  • The next is the reception efficiency with the barcode scan replacing all of the reception arrival tasks, meaning the number of receptionists, can immediately be reviewed.

  • The reception area becomes clutter free, as transaction times are seconds and the visitor is on their way.

  • The host is notified automatically removing the "chase the host" game, reception staff, are asked to play.

  • And security systems and processes upgraded with visitor data, photographs, digital Q & A, and blacklist checking, which means your security chief and workplace inhabitants can relax a little bit more.

  • And with access control barriers also enabled, you can use one barcode for check-in recognition and building access.

  • No only that, but with social distancing, the reception area does not become a congestion point or a pandemic risk. making returning to the workplace a tad less concerning.
